reinstalling windows xp

I tried to uninstall windows xp from my laptop to get rid
of a previous owners's junk. I didn't have the original
xp disk, but tried to reinstall with a different xp disk.
When I try to confirm with the ID number, it comes up
invalid. Can I somehow use the product key and confirm
windows without buying all new software?

You would be best served by contacting the former owner and getting the XP CD that was customized for installation on that particular laptop as they do not usually like retail versions of XP
