Is there any way of saving xp updates (service pack 1 etc)
so that should I have to reinstall XP for any reason, I
dont have to spend endless hours going through the
updating process all over again? (slow modem and old XP
version) all suggestions gratefully recieved

You can download the Service Pack 1. It is known as a networked
installation version.

For SP1 you really need to get the Network version - either as a
download and burn to CD by a friend with a broadband connection (it is
130MB), or by spending $10 on the CD (link below on the page).

For later updates you can be sure Temporary Internet Files is clear (for
convenience of finding things in it) before going to check Windows
Update. Then when at the point where it asks you to confirm
installation, copy the downloaded .exe files to a safe folder, from
which to burn them to CD when a suitable amount has built up
