After reading post after post, I have determined that my course of action may
not have been the best, but here is where I am:
1. Norton AV and RDP have not been working at all on my computer (Windows
XP Pro w/ all patches and updates). When I try to reinstall Norton or the
RDP client, the system hangs -- usually on checking the version of installer.
2. Thinking (apparently incorrectly!) that I could fix the problem by
re-installing XP Pro on the same hard drive, I set out to do just that... I
booted from the CD, selected the option to re-install the OS and sat back.
3. The Setup program starts hanging almost immediately. The machine can
sit there for hours and the little green boxes at the bottom of the screen go
nowhere, the status bar does not change, and the estimated time remaining
remains the same. I still have data on the hard drive, otherwise deleting
the partition and performing a clean install would be an attractive option --
although it seems I had the same problem during the initial setup.
4. I do have another hard drive I've tried to do a clean install on, but I
get a STOP message 0x00007E I believe -- not sure what that is all about. My
though is: install to the other drive, retreive my data from the original
drive, then erase and do a clean install on the original drive.
As I said, after reading what everyone has been dealing with, I realize I've
made quite a mess. I would appreciate any help you can give to help me out.
Thanks!
