I have somehow managed to remove sndvol32.exe from my system. Hence,
no manipulation of system volume is possible and I need to reinstall
it. I believe there is a way, using the command line, to extract and
install the file from the appropriate .cab file on the cd, but do not
know how to do this. My efforts to google it haven't been successful.
Can somebody explain this, or otherwise how I can restore my volume
control.

Place your XP CD in then go to Start/Run and type in:
EXPAND -R X:\I386\powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32

Once done: Go to Start >Run and type: regsvr32 stobject.dll

Good luck

Thanks to all, particularly Roger, who wrote about this. Amazingly, I
was able to simply copy sndvol32 from another computer into the
system32 folder and I could reinstate the shortcut. I didn't think
such things ever worked in windows! Obviously, the necessary registry
entries still existed, so restoring the file did the trick.
