Reinstalling problem

A computer has Win XP Home. The computer has the OS that came from the
factory - all updates from MS have been installed.

I want to boot using the XP Home disk that came with the PC and re-install
Win XP. I get the following message:

"The version of XP on your pc is newer than the version you are trying to
install and you can not continue".

This is wrong, the version is the same that came with the PC with the
exception of the updates. My question is this:

Is there any way to bypass the message I am getting and re-install XP?
Please let me know if you know of any "trick of the trade" to help me with
this. Thanks.

If you have SP2 installed, you'll need to unistall it before
repairing Windows XP. The alternative is to make a new
Windows XP CD with SP2 slipstreamed.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

I'm not sure if I understand your question, so i'm going to make a guess:

You have a computer that came preloaded with xp home, and now want to
completely remove all data and reinstall windows as if it were on a blank
hard disk.

If that is right, than you are going to first format (which basically means
delete) your hard drive.

First, Let me make sure you know that by doing this you will lose all data
(including your documents and programs). If you don't mind, (or if you have
backed it all up to cd's,) then you need to do the following:

1) Create a MS-DOS startup disk.
First, insert a blank floppy disk in your floppy drive and open 'My
Computer'. Then, you will need to right click your floppy drive (usually the
A drive), and click format.
Check the 'Create an MS-DOS startup disk' checkbox and click start.

2) Boot from the MS-DOS startup disk
Shut down your computer, insert the startup disk, and start up your computer.

3) Format the Drive
When the MS-DOS prompt comes up, type in "FORMAT C:", (without the
parenthesis,) and it should say the following:

"WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST!
Proceed with Format (Y/N)?"

To continue, you will have to press Y.

REMEMBER: This will completely get rid of all data, so make sure you have
everything backed up.

4) Install Windows
Now you should be able to install windows without a problem.

Hope this helps!

P.S. Also, make sure that you installation cd is designated to be used on
new pc's, otherwise it may have to have an OS already installed.

You have installed SP2. That makes it into a more recent version of the
system. To do a repair reinstall you would need an installation CD that
has had SP2 'slipstreamed' into it. If you want to go the whole way,
backing up data, formatting the disk and reinstalling everything from
scratch, then You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after
booting the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement
take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select
and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted
at the next stage

And have the SP2 CD on hand to run immediately, before ever connecting
to the Internet
