I want to buy the full version of XP for systems without an OS. Will I be able to reinstall this version on same computer even if I do upgrades on the componenets? I format my hard drive all the time for various reasons. Plus once I upgrade to a totally new/better system can I reinstall this same copy on a new computer? I heard aboout the registration item but can't understand if I am the only user why can't I put it on all my computer in my household.

Diane, just one license per Computer. You can change quite a few
components before MS will ask you
to reactivate. No, you will not be able to use that version on a newer
computer.

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. Nor is there ever a
charge. If it's been more than 120 days since you last activated
that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to activate via
the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might have to
make a 5 minute phone call.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable to a
new computer), simply remove WinXP from old computer before installing
it onto the new one. Again, if it's been more than 120 days since you
last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able
to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Thanks Bruce, finally somebody gave me a detailed answer. Now I will be able to buy the full OS with confidence. Since I am always screwing up something on my computer, the easiest way for me to fix it is to format. I have a dinosaur of a computer and since you said XP is good for only one computer then maybe I will wait a year or so to build a better computer to buy XP for.

If you buy a retail license, you'll be able to transfer it to a
newer computer when you buy it. Just remove it from the old computer
first. It's only the OEM licenses that are permanently bound to the
first PC.
