I just reinstalled XP. I'm using the same computer, the same router,
the same service, the same cable, the same legit XP license,
EVERYTHING IS THE SAME.

Yet, I can't get on the net. I can't even get to my router
192.168.1.1. Pinging other pc's on the router by IP doesn't work
either.

My motherboard is Abit IC7-G. I installed the same intel drivers I
did the first time I installed XP on this machine 6 months ago.

You're thinking the hardware must have broken coincidentally in the
one day I installed a new XP? But get this- I'm in Knoppix right now,
on the same PC, typing this..

!!!!??!?!!

What am I missing, why can't I get on the net? What would you like to
know, please help,

Do you get an error message when you try pinging? If you do have you
tried typing in the error number in the Microsoft site?

Type

ipconfig /all

at a cmd prompt. This should tell you the assigned IP address, the default
gateway, and DNS server. The IP should be in the same subnet as the router,
in your case it should be 192.168.1.something. Gateway/DNS should normally be
the router's IP.

If these aren't right then DHCP may not be working, or there may be an issue
with the network-card driver.

There are no error messages it just says "request timed out"

All it says is "Windows IP Configuration". and two newlines.

Did you run the network setup wizard? Reinstallation wipes everything out.

Post the results of ipconfig/all.

Based on your answers to other suggestions, it really sounds as if the
Windows driver for the NIC is corrupted on not installed correctly. Try
removing the NIC in Device Manager and rebooting to see if Windows can
detect the device and reinstall it.

Try re-downloading the driver.

The fact that it works in Knoppix says that the NIC hardware is OK, but
Knoppix (of course) uses a Linux driver, not the Windows driver.

I did, it's in an earlier post on this thread (your newsgroup server
may not have that message yet). The output is:

Windows IP Configuration

(followed by two newlines).

I think you're right. But I'm still stuck. The driver it's using now
is something like "NIC 1394". I'm not sure if that's the intel driver
I tried to install or not. When I manually point it at either of the
drivers from the win2kXP03 zip, it rejects them. (Again this is the
same zip I originally used when I installed windows), here it is
second one from the bottom:

"NIC 1394" sounds like the wrong thing. "1394" usually refers to IEEE
1394, or FireWire -- not your Ethernet NIC.

If I were you, I'd unzip that entire file into its own directory, then
go into the DOCS sub-directory, click on index.htm, and see if that
doesn't help you find the correct driver. You'll need to decide if you
want to intall the Intel PROSet configuration software or just the base
driver. If it was me, I'd just install the base driver.

Done. As it turns out I was confusing the 1394 thing with my network
adapter. Since it was under the "Network adapters" section, and I
only have one network adapter, I though that must be it. But
apparently there's somehow two. Thanks Lem,

You're welcome. Glad you got things sorted out.
