I posted a question yesterday about the event viewer not
displaying details about an event, so I'll pose a
solution and see if I can get some advice. Question: Is
there any risk associated with installing WinXP Pro on
top of itself. As a note, I have tried the recovery
console, to fix the problem but haven't had any success
with that path either.

Regards,

Dan

Hi Daniel,

I am unfamiliar with your root issue, where the event log
entries fail to display details and you find event msgs of
origin Event Manager Interface with id 257

However, on your new question, it is very possible that
an over-install will not help. The upgrade/repair install
attempts to preserve the configuration of the existing machine,
and so, if your issue is due to something that is preserved then
the over-install will be a long road without change. Of course,
it is also possible that you are dealing with a corrupt file issue
or similar in which case an over-install may help. However
in this case using SFC should also help.
sfc /scannow
sfc /?

Also, keep in mind that after an upgrade/repair install
you are facing reapplying service pack and security/critical
patches.

Roger,
Thanks so much for the reply. The root issue is that I
cannot display events in the event viewer for any
category of events. Whe I double click on an event, there
is no display of event details, so whatever program, or
dll is responsible (maybe it is the mmc itself) for
displaying these messages seems to be inoperative for
some reason. I happen by circumstance noticed the
appearance in the event log itself the occurences of 2
257 error messages that appear one after the other. The
only information I can ascertain is from the brief
description in the event log which lists the alert
manager as the source. So there is no hard evidence that
the two are related, but their is some coincidence
between them. I've tried the recovery console with no
effect and at this time (since there is no info in the MS
K/B about 257 events) can only hope that re-intstalling
via the upgrade method might correct this. I know seems
like using a shotgun to kill a mosquito.
Also, I am not familiar with sfc/scannow. Can you
provide some detail.
Thanks,

Dan

sfc is the capability the uses the dllcache directory
and a binary table of hash values for Windows files.
sfc is system file checker
When one does a scannow any files that should be
replaced from the dllcache will be, if possible, and
if not you will be prompted for the install media.
I would try sfc /scannow before taking out the sledge
hammer to combat this mosquito.

Thanks Roger,
Merry Christmas.

Roger,

Just to feedback the results to you so you'll know. I
performed the procedure as you outlined with the results
being that it completed without restoring any files and
the problem still exists. Now I'm pondering my next move.
HM?

Thanks for the effort.

Why not try a new post with a subject naming that
event viewer details fail to display
and see if some MS person picks up on it ?
You no doubt have an event msg that says why
but I get no hits with that for some guidance.

Roger,
Tried that a day earlier, with no response. Maybe I'll
try again. By the way I also did the sfc /scannow on
another box on my lan and was able to correct a couple of
problems, so it was not an effort totally withour merit.

Good. I am just doubtful that an upgrade install
is going to have inpact on this is sfc does not.
