I suspect that some files has disapered out of accident from my XP
configuration. I would like the XP CD to reinstall this files without
changing my current configuration. Is that possible to do and how in tha t
case....
In WIN 98 there was a repair mode in the CD. I cannot find this on the XP
CD.

Please advice

Hi Thomas

Try running "sfc /scannow" - with the quotes - from Start>Run. You may be asked for your XP CD.

If that doesn't help you can try a 'Repair Install':

Boot your PC from the XP CD. At the setup screen do not select the option to repair using Recovery Console, but press Enter instead - this will start the Windows setup program. After accepting the license agreement, your system is searched for any Windows installations - then you will see a list of current installations. Select the one that you want to repair and press 'R'.

I don't how or if this will work if you have a supplier's 'Recovery Disk'.

Oops - rephrase:

Try running "sfc /scannow" - *without* the quotes - from Start>Run. You may be asked for your XP CD.

Sorry.

start, run, cmd, then in the cmd window type 'sfc /scannow'. That will
force a check/repair of what WinXP considers to be its critical system
files.

start, help, sfc for more info.
start, help, repair is some use too, but doesn't describe ...

You can (with more effort) do a repair install - boot the CD (or autorun
it), make like you are installing XP over again, and when you get just
past the 'put your product code in' point you should be able to select
between 'fresh install' and 'repair existing installation(s).'. You want
the latter.

Note - this assume you have a 'proper' Windows XP CD, not some ugly
restore disk, or hidden restore partition on your hard drive.

Lots more info out there (www.google.com 'Windows XP repair install'
would be a good place to start.)
