After I uninstalled a program, my Windows XP prof.
machine stopped booting up. The machine shows this error
message:

windows can not start up because this file is missing or
corrupt:

<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll

Please reinstall this file. How do I reinstall this file?

Thanks so much and happy holidays. CC112254

Boot the Windows XP setup disc and run the Recvoery
Console.
At the command prompt type:
chkdsk c: /p
Once repairs are complete type:
exit
to restart your computer.
If this repair is unsuccessful boot the Windows XP setup
disc and press ENTER, then F8, then R to repair your
exisiting Windows XP installation.
NOTE: There is a risk of losing registry information
during the repair process.
NOTE: HAL.DLL is built by SETUP during installation and
can't be replaced from the Windows XP disc.
