I am having a terrible time finding out from various sites
about doing a clean reinstall on my hd. I had ME then did
an upgrade to XP home with an upgrade CD. Do I have to
reinstall ME to clean my computer up?
No. A clean install generally means that you've formatted the disk and
started from a 'clean' drive. The XP upgrade install will upgrade to a
'clean' drive, but you must be able to provide proof that you've had a
previous version of Windows. This means you''ll be asked to insert the ME
(or 98 etc) CD. The install will then proceed. It's quite simple.
I understand, I
think that ME put stuff on your computer and it stays
there even with the upgrade of XP.
Generally not really true, except for personalized registry settings
(especially in regard to installed applications). Windows files will be
replaced; ME files will generally not work with XP.
Is there anything
special I need to do on starting a clean install?
Yes, you need to be sure that you have backed up your data and verified the
backup!
Also, be sure to run the Upgrade Advisor, which is on the CD's autorun. Pay
attention to anything it tells you about hardware and software that needs
updates or is not compatible. If updates are needed, be sure you know
where to get them. If things are not compatible, find replacements.
Set your machine's BIOS to boot from CD, so that it will recognise the CD.
Watch the screen at system startup to see what key to press to get into the
system setup; it's usually F2, DEL, or INS. Look for 'boot sequence'.
Once that is set, you will not need a boot diskette..
If you cannot successfully boot from CD for whatever reason, you only need a
DOS boot diskette with CD drivers to run the install. You do *not* need
the six-diskette boot set. Once you've booted with this disk, change to
the CD drive, go to the \i386 directory, and run 'winnt.exe'. That is the
actual setup program - it's not setup.exe.
Thanks
for any information any one could give me. It's not for
the lack of trying to find the information else where.
