Hi again,

In the article you gave. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341
Under Method 2.. step number 5:

"5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in
the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP. "

I dont have the option of pressing "R". i only have the option of installing
a fresh copy of Windows in the drive letter i specify. Is this the same?

Thanks,
Eric

Sounds like the OEM installation CD you have doesn't offer the repair
option. Contact the tech support for your computer and see what
recovery options they offer. They might not offer a non destructive
recovery.

Additionally to save the data slave the drive in another windows XP or
Win2k computer and copy the essential data. You should do this before
trying any any solutions to repair the system.

What specifically happens when you try to boot? What happened that
caused the system to not boot? Maybe there are some solutions besides a
repair install. For example running chkdsk /p from the recovery console
can help depending on the problem.

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

Make sure though, as I said above, that you save the important data from
the drive before trying any recovery methods.

Hi again,

This did not work: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

on warning # 2

- step 3 only lists available commands for bootcfg. it doesnt do anything as
said on step 4. I still dont have the option to repair windows when i restart.

Also:

"(two other files needed - just in case)
1. Type: attrib -h -r -s C:\boot.ini del C:\boot.ini
2. Type: BootCfg /Rebuild"

- when entering number 1 above. it says not valid parameter.
- number 2 above says that unable to rebuild bootcfg due to corrupted.....
(something like that)

please help,

Thanks,
Eric
