I bought a dell laptop with XP/pro sp1 pre loaded (I just had to run through
the setup).

I hosed it and need to reformat the drive and reload xp from the disk. Do I
lose my license for that machine?

I guess I'm not sure how the MS licensing works in this case.
thanks, bg

Just go right ahead and reinstall.

You already submit your license and there no problems reinstalling your same
XP CD and same hard disk. If you use that same XP cd on another hard disk
you are not allowed and you will get you XP became disable.

Same XP cd on same hard disk because your hard disk also have serial numbers
register with your xp serial number to the microsoft.

So if you want to install on another hard disk you have to buy another xp
cd.

You can format and reinstall xp an unlimited amount of times on the same
computer. And most likely it's bios locked so reactivation would not be
needed.

No - you can reinstall that over and over *on the same hardware* but may
not move it to another machine. It will BTW most probably have been
authorised by being 'locked' to the BIOS of the machine and will not ask
to be activated
