I have a Dell Dimension 3000 (1GB RAM). My HD is on its last legs, so I tried
to install a new one. When I did an install of my valid XP Home Edition (that
came with the PC), it set up in what looked like Safe Mode, and would not let
me make any changes to the configuration. The display settings were the
lowest possible resolution.

The HD is fine, because afterwards I installed Ubuntu Linux without any
problems.

Any thoughts on how I can do a proper XP install?

Thanks

Its little to with the XP install, you need to install chipset & other hw
drivers from Dell, specific to your tag#
Doubtless if you looked in hardware devices you'd see lots of exclamation
marks.
DONT use winupdate for drivers

You are only half done. Now, you need to install the drivers for your
hardware from the Dell supplied CD.
Just follow the instructions in the fine manual.

Jim,

I tried what you suggested but the damn software said it couldn't find the
drivers on the supplied disc.

Thanks for your response
