I get the reinstall error documented in Knowledge Base 228852 (access to CDROM lost when GUI-mode setup starts). The suggested workaround is "use a Windows 98 Startup disk with CD-ROM drive support to copy the I386 folder from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to the hard disk. Then, run Winnt.exe from the copied folder to install Windows 2000." I copied the I386 folder to my C drive. I run Winnt from the copied folder and nothing happens. Any ideas on what to do next? I'm trying to reinstall Windows 2000 on a Windows 2000 machine without wiping out my user files. I'm running Winnt from the command prompt put up by the Windows 98 Startup disk as the existing Windows 2000 installation won't run
Thanks

There are several strange things happening on your machine. I think you're
moving dangerously close to losing all your files. I strongly recommend that
you now do what you should have done a long time ago: back up your user
files while you can.

1. Install the problem disk as a slave disk in some other Win2000 PC.
2. Back up all your user files.
3. Start a Command Prompt.
4. Type this command: xcopy /s /y e:\i386\*.* d:\i386\
(I assume that E: is the CD drive letter and D: is the slave drive
letter)
(I also assume that D: is a FAT32 partition)
5. Return the problem disk to its home.
6. Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com
7. Type these commands:
C:
cd \i386
winnt

If this does not work then you'll have to replace your Win2000 CD.

I'm puzzled as to why you'd think the Windows 2000 CD is bad. The problem that I'm having in reading files off of it is precisely as described in the Knowledge Base -- I'm missing the exact same file, namely NT5INF.CAT -- and the Knowledge Base article says it's caused by a timing issue in the CD-ROM not reacting fast enough during setup

I was able to copy the I386 folder from the Windows 2000 CD to a temporary folder on my C drive without errors. The problem I have then is that when I connect to that temporary folder and run winnt, nothing happens.

Please describe how you "connect" to that temporary folder and "run" winnt.

Thanks for your help and I have gotten a bit further. I copied the files from the CD (D:\I386) to a temporary area on my C drive. Then, I rebooted the Windows 2000 reinstall CD; when the setup gui couldn't find files (because of the original problem discussed in the knowledge base article), I directed it to the files which I'd copied to the C drive. The Windows 2000 system is now running again in safe mode, but won't reboot in "normal" mode. I got the following error in the reboot process
Setup could not register the OLE Contro
C:\WINNT\System32\dxmrtp.dl
because of the following erro
LoadLibrary returned error 1001 (3e9
Any idea what's causing this and how I can fix it
Also, in safe mode, it's not recognizing my CD burner drive (i.e. E:). I'd really like to back up my files using that drive which I thought I should be able to do in safe mode. Is there any way to do this
Thanks

The only reason I can think of that your CD drive isn't displayed in safe mode is that you have Adaptec CD creator installed, is
that right?

That could also explain the initial failure with the install procedure not being able to find nt5inf.cat.

It may be too late to help, but check this article:
