My daughter's computer keeps getting pop-ups saying that her registry is
damaged and she should go to registrycleaner.com to fix the problem. I've
run SpybotSD, Lavasoft Adware, Avast antivirus and AVG and everything comes
back clean. Does anyone know where this problem resides and how to fix it?
Is "CrapCleaner" any use? Please help.

Your daughter's computer is infected with adware.
I suspected this or I would not have run adware detection and removal tools.
The question was how to get rid of it.
"...any use" for what purpose?
I think the answer to that is self evident.

You have a pretty good selection of antispyware tools already
installed. Have they all been updated to the latest versions of both
the program and the virus/spyware definition files?

Try going to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and doing a free online
scan of the computer for both viruses and spyware. The popups are a
confirmation that there is something there, and we need to try
different programs until one of the actually finds it and gets rid of
it for you.

Good luck

It appears she is running XP-SP1 and, as such, does not have an adequate
firewall installed. A glitch in XP-SP1 is that it allows others to use your
Windows Messenger service to post pop up type ads on your system. A
responder on another NG was kind enough to direct me to a web site which
explains how to disable messenger service. I realize that this is only a
temporary solution but it's done the trick for now. Thanks anyway.

By infected you mean....? If a virus really slows down the system or causes
damage to it or if the spyware reports my behaviour to some third party
along with all of my personal information then it becomes a cause for
concern. Otherwise who really cares. Some adware only shows ads on the
program it was bundled with. Some spyware will collect information about
which sites you visit without collecting sensitive information such as
passwords or other personal information. If the adware/spyware is not of a
malicious nature and doesn't slow down my computer significantly I really
don't care that much. People, I find, spend a significant amount of time and
money trying to prevent and correct issues that are really very minor.
