What exactly do you want to do?

Editing the registry can be like going over Niagra Falls in a barrel,
and often is just as disastrous if you are not absolutely certain that
you know what you are doing.

The registry editor included with Windows XP is REGEDIT. Use Start -
Run - REGEDIT.

Before you make any changes launch System Restore and create a new
manual restore point, or even better download ERUNT from
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html and use it to create a
registry backup.
.. That will provide you with a possible recovery route in case
things go blooey.

Good luck

Kmcc,

What ever your going to do in the Registry PLEASE be careful, make sure you
make a backup of the Registry once in Regedit goto:

File, then Export
At the bottom Make sure
Under export range "All" is choosen

Then save to your desktop or something, this may be useful if you mess up
and need to call and expert.

Hi,

You've got some good advice there.
The program ERUNT will create a copy of your registry once a day on
startup if you select this option on install, although it will slow
your startup a bit. It creates a dated folder for each day for 30
days, allowing you to restore the registry by clicking on the
executable available in each dated folder (ERDNT.EXE).

If you decide to backup (export) your registry from within Windows
native Registry Editor, don't forget to do this. There's a chance you
can forget if you make a lot of changes.

Can I suggest you get a third-party Registry Editor? This one has the
distinct advantage that it creates an Undo for every registry edit you
make manually yourself (right-click on the entry in the Undo section):

how rude are you???.why do you bother to reply if you have nothing useful to
say.i was only looking for help not smart comments.

The WinXP registry can be found in C:\Windows\System32\Config\.
It'll be divided into several data files, such as Security, Software,
and System. The user-specific portion of the registry is stored in each
user profile, in a file named NTUser.dat.

Let me add my voice to that of others who have said much the same thing. The
registry is Windows central database of information. If you screw up what's
there, you are very likely to end up with an unbootable computer. Since you
don't know where to find the registry, and are "not long enough in the
game," your best advice is probably to stay well away from the registry
until you know more.

Exactly what is your problem? What do you want to do in the registry and how
do you know that's what you should be doing?

what i want to do is get rid of a program pceye 2000 that is running and
taking up space that i cannot stop or access. i am not going to do do
anything hastilly in registry as i know this could cause me major problems.i
have a restore point set just in case as advised by others. thanks for your
response

The advice to backup the registry is excellent, however trying to backup the
registry in it's totality from within regedit is worthless. It does not
backup all of the registry, and it cannot be used to restore the registry to
the state it was in before it was edited.

It is wiser to export copies of individual registry keys before editing
them. They can be imported to replace the changes if things don't go well.

There is a way to do a complete backup of the registry which can be used to
restore the registry in its entirety, a program called ERUNT. Create a
scheduled task to backup the registry daily; when properly setup the
registry can be restored from the recovery console. Here are some links for
how to do that.
