I have a file called "~" that occasionally appears on my desktop. I have been getting several calls in my work about it, and realised that I had it as well, and might as well look into it. I was wondering if anyone could assist me, or point me in the right direction on tracing that file to see where it came from?

This files are usualy left over temporary files that applications did not
delete when they exited or, perhaps, they were not deleted because
applications that created them were aborted. I've seen those a lot in the
past with previous versions of MS Office.
