i use a program called Winxp manager to clean my registry,
it shows that I have alot of invalid paths and invalid
start menu items. Is it ok to delete those registry entries??

You take your chances with any registry cleaner product.
Does it create an "undo file" if something goes wrong?
Many folks who ask questions in these newsgroups used
registry cleaners that ultimately corrupted their Windows
system or program files.

Is there something broken on our computer that needs fixing? Is it
really necessary to mess with this?

First make sure you have a good backup - a restore point freshly made,
or even better get the free ERUNT from
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt
and use that - so that if anything gets overdone you can put them back
