While downloading Spybot, other available downloads were available to look
into. One was Registry Mechanic / Registry Cleaner. I haven't seen this
mentioned in the newsgroups before.

Sounds good, but not sure if I want a software program messing with my
registry. Any experience with this, experts?

Thanks!
H.

Your suspicions are correct. If you are not familiar
with the registry to a point that you have to ask that
question, then using a program like that could cause you
serious problems that would require reinstalling Windows
to repair the damage.

I don't think I'm that unfamiliar with the registry. I have edited it, very
carefully. Sometimes it gets a little time-consuming removing some items -
thanks to 2 teenagers who sometimes click now - ask questions later. It
would be nice to have a nice little "wizard" to help do this, rather than
one slow step at a time. But as I mentioned before, I've never seen this
program mentioned in any of the Windows XP newsgroups I follow.

Thanks for you input.

Your proposed use of the software - as a convenient interface to help you do
what you understand and know how to do anyway - is, in my opinion, the best
and only reason to use a so-called registry cleaner. Can you limit your
teenagers' access to the registry, either through the operating system or by
an adjustment to their allowances?

Rocky,

Yes, I think I will put parental controls back on my teenagers' user
accounts. Especially the younger one's since that's where these adware &
malware risks have been showing up recently on our virus scans. Much as
they hate the slowdown with our 'lovely' NIS2004, I think I'd rather do that
than use the Registry Mechanic I was asking about.

Going through Symantec's removal process for some of the items that have
been showing up gets to be long and tedious. Unfortunately, they're not abe
to be deleted by the anti-virus software & have to be manually deleted.
Doesn't that sound like a fun way to spend my summer? I think not!

The parental controls had been disabled since the last time I had to
uninstall & reinstall NIS 2004, another long & tedious process that I just
love repeating. Hadn't gotten around to configuring that portion. (Sorry;
I've had to do this 2 times already, which means I've installed and
configured it 3 times now and we've only had the program for 2 months. Will
most definitely switch when our subsription is up.)

Thanks for your input.

My pleasure. I'm a great fan of Norton Antivirus and Norton Ghost, but I
will say that Symantec doesn't make it easy to uninstall their products!

Rocky

Not only that; I find configuring all the components of NIS for 4 different
users quite time-consuming. And we seem to have slowed down immensely since
installing this. (And parental controls slows the kids down that much
more!) Logging on to a user account is quite a bit slower than it was
before with the old Norton Anti-virus program.
