Raging Bullwinkle

Hi,

I run Win XP, home edition. Just finishing cleaning up a trojan
infection on my system that had placed a bogus key in the reg
(powerprof.exe). While researching this problem I came across
references to a certain entry that apparently should be listed under
the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

key. Is there supposed to be an entry listed as

LoadPowerProfile Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

in there? I did find such an entry, but it was under the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\DisabledRunKeys

Does that mean that it should be running but is not, and was possibly
disabled by the trojan? If so, how can I enable it?

Or is it something that was probably just disabled to begin with and I
should just leave alone? One page that I saw on Symantec said that the
LoadPowerProfile value may not be present on all operating systems.

I know this is confusing but I'm trying to get my system clean again
and want everything that is supposed to be working to work.

Thanks,

RB

Hi,

I don't have the entries in the two keys you mentioned in my Windows
XP Pro.

Good luck

Someone pointed me to MS Knowledge Base article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300886 that
seems to refer to this issue. I had upgraded to XP from ME a few years
ago, and it apparently disabled the LoadPowerProfile feature. I guess
if it was disabled by the system during the upgrade, it can't be
terribly necessary, so it might be best to just leave it where it is.
Thanks for your help.
