Windows XP SP1
HKLM\Software\Classes\CLSID
HKLM\Software\Classes\CLSID\CLSID

Above keys/hive were inadvertently deleted. Exported
above from a working machine, then, imported into non-
working machine, via Safe Mode & Dos prompt (c:\regedit).
Imported above keys/hive via Registry window (highlighted
target folder, then import/[e:\filename.reg].

Problem: CLSID and CLSID/CLSID did not import properly,
error states: "Error Opening Key, Cannot open CLSID:
Error while opening key."

Boots normally, can log in, then hangs in a blank desktop
with chosen jpg background.

Any solutions is appreciated.

Thank you for the solution. One problem, I can't access
the START button to execute RUN. I can only access Safe
Mode with dos prompt and access c:\ prompt. Any other
way to run "sfc /scannow" in the c:\ prompt?

Have your XP disk or recovery disk ready and then reboot
pressing F8 to get the options list. Then choose safe
mode with networking and then put the disk in the drive.
Now go start\run and type in sfc /scannow Be sure to
put the space after sfc and before the / . This will do
a System File Check and replace any missing or corrupt OS
files with the originals found on the disk. If this
fails then leave the disk in the drive and reboot. Down
the bottom you should get a warning stating "press any
key to boot from disk" . Hit the space bar or enter or
any key and let it load all the drivers from the disk and
see if you can get to the desktop and then go>start\run
and type in sfc /scannow. Good luck.

Boot, hitting F8 as BIOS info goes black to get the menu; take
Safe Mode - Command Prompt.

There give
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
which will launch the system restore program - use the 'restore to
previous state' to go back to a pint made before you deleted the items
