Hey Guys,

I was "tweaking" my computer by fooling with the
registry. Well I messed it up and the computer won't
boot into Windows. I know exactly what registry files
need to be changed but I don't know if I can access them
without being in Windows. Could someone tell me how I
can edit the registry and make the changes I need to make
from something like the Recovery Console or Command
Prompt? Oh and if you know of a place I can go that can
help me, let me know..I don't know if I'm the proper
newsgroup for this kind of problem. Thanks y'all

Yes I got that... now how do I use the Recovery Console
to edit the registry? That's the part I need help on

can someone please help me before my boyfriend gets
home? I deleted the cfg files out of my registry and when
i tried to system restore it now says i have no restore
points.( i did before i started deleting things i
shouldn't have) If it helps at all i haven't closed the
registry yet...please help

Not sure if this will help you, I just don't know. But it's
worth a try I guess.

If you know how to write a registry file, one that ends in
..reg, then you might be able to type something like:

regedit file.reg

at the command line.

Normally when you type up a .reg file, and double-click
on it from Windows Explorer, something loads it into the
registry. I'm thinking along the lines that RegEdit is the
app that actually does it. RegEdt32.exe on an XP
machine starts up Regedit.exe. But I'm just not sure if
it can load a .reg file and that it's the program that does
the process, and if it can be started from the command
console. There is a list of commands that can be run from
the command console when you type HELP. It might be
that only the commands that are available when you type
HELP are there.

I have noticed some inconsistancies in it at times though.

I think you might have to do something like a NET LOGON
under an administrative account to get more things done.

Hope that helps.

Your post is confusing.
First quote:
"Well I messed it up and the computer won't boot into Windows."
Second quote:
"i tried to system restore it now says i have no restore points."
Third quote:
"If it helps at all i haven't closed the registry yet...please help"

Question:
If you cannot boot into Windows, how is it you are trying to employ
System Restore and are still in Registry Editor?

If in fact there are no Restore Points available, then you have pretty
much botched things up, unless you exported (backed up) the entire
Registry by exporting it first as a .reg file before you began your ill advised
Registry editing. If you had done so and were able to get into Windows,
then you could just double-click on that .reg file and put the entire Registry back.

The only other possible procedure for repairing this Windows installation
(at least as far as I can discern from your confusing post) would be to employ
Knowledge Base article 307545. If there are no RP (Restore Point) folders
for a time prior to your "adventure" then you will need to stay with the original
Registry from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder and probably run a Repair Install
of XP and then install all XP critical updates and install all programs again.
(By the way, if you are using a cable modem or DSL that is always on and
NOT using a router, you better physically disconnect that Internet connection
and not connect it again until you have the XP ICF enabled or a third-party
firewall installed so as not to get hit by the msblaster worm or one of its
variants)
