can any knowledgable person advise me or guide me through repairing the part of the registry that relates to my cdrw? i am certain i have deleted something whist using registry mechanic. i have tried to fix the problem with my cdrw for about 3 months now with no success. my drive will not read any type of disc. i have tried the things suggested my the manufacturer "optorite". i dont know if the drive is malfunctioning or if it is the registr problem as i suspect.

if the CDRW shows up in 'My Computer', there is a good chance that the unit
is faulty..

it does show up as this device is working properly. driver shows up as ok. should i bite the bullet and just replace it?

Remove it from Device Manager, reboot & let XP re-find it.
It won't be a software or Registry problem, for if they is corrupt, it will
still work as a normal CD-ROM drive and read CDs if the drive's not faulty.

Device Manager recognizes the unit because it is still a cd drive whether or
not the laser is working correctly.. XP drivers are what enable it to be
recognized, which yours does, but cd lasers can and do fail.. I was once
told that cd drives have a good life of four years all being well.. of
course, some will outlast that and others won't.. there is no guarantee
either way..
