Registry Fix or Registry Mechanic?

I use Registry Mechanic on WinXP Pro SP2 - has got rid of all sorts of
rubbish from the registry left behind by old programs. Recommended.

The general concensus is, if you are not able to manually edit the registry
yourself (in other words you may not be experienced enough to manually edit
the registry) you are better off forgetting registry cleaner etc and leave
well alone.

Before using registry mechanic or any other registry cleaner you need to
know exactly what it is going to delete (hence the need to know how to
manually edit the registry) If you are aware of 'what' and 'what not' to
delete you have a better chance of any registry application not upsetting
your system.

If you are going to use a registry cleaner then always make sure the
registry is backed up prior to any work being carried out on it (this also
includes manual editing).

I, personally, haven't used Registry Mechanic or Registry Fix. I have,
however, found AMUST Registry Cleaner to be of value. If you visit my
website http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Click on the Review tab and you
will find my review of AMUST. One problem that was worrying with AMUST was
that all resgitry backups were done manually rather than automatically.
Having spoken with the developer's, they have sent me the latest version of
AMUST and you can now schedule it, during install, to backup the registry
prior to 'fixing' any registry problems.

I use it about once a month and, so far (over a period of 4 months) the
first time i used it i got 250 error. These i got the software to fix. Since
then, every time i have used it, the display has always said
'Congratulations your registry is in perfect order' in other words, although
i install and uninstall software regularly, after the first scan by AMUST
nothing was found to be wrong with the registry.

What is your experience with either product and Windows XP Pro SP#2?

I agree with John Barnett and Ted Ziegler. Registry cleaners should
rarely be used, and most often only to save time compared to what it
takes to do the cleaning manually.

I have no direct experience with the two products you mentioned.
However from the comments of others whom I know and who have used
these products they have nothing specific about them that makes them
any better than other products in this group.

When I do have to use a registry cleaner, such as when de-Nortoning a
system, I use RegSeeker (free) from http://www.hoverdesk.net/

I have never found it to be overly aggressive in terms of what it
removes and by default it creates a backup .REG file of whatever it
removes.

Good luck

Hi Ritter:

I downloaded Registry cleaner about three years ago on a whim after the
online scan said, "Whizzz BANG, you have hundreds of problems in your
registry (some of which may be critical). Buy the program and we will then
fix it for you." I said, "WOWIE!! My computer was a spinning time bomb. Am
i glad I got this program". It "fixed" the registry for me (for $30 or
whatever) but nothing ran better and my girlfriend still dumped me.

So sorry, the girlfriend dropped you over a mere $ 30.00.

But thanks nevertheless.
