Thanks, Willit. Just researched this problem in Google. A previous replyto
a similar question in this NG recommended with the use of ERUNT:

"If you make its backup folder inside the C:\Windows one, then you couldin
extreme emergency copy the files from it back over the ones in
system32\config by a copy at a recovery console boot of the CD."

I just downloaded ERUNT. However, its Readme states that the default folder
for the copied files will *not* be C:\Windows but instead just C:

I can, of course, choose not to copy to the default path when I run ERUNT.

So is there really any functional difference as to which of the 2 above
paths the Console is better able to restore from?

ERUNT defaults to C:\ERDNT as its folder. But if you have to do the
'extreme emergency' copy back from the recovery console, you can only do
it for files *directly* in the root of the drive, or in a folder under
the system folders. So use C:\Windows\ERDNT and that becomes possible -
copy the files from it other than ntuser.dat ones into
Windows\system32\config. Once you can manage to boot again, you can use
ERUNT's restore to tidy up user ntuser.dat files to their folders
