Registry errors:

I recently did a scan for registry errors and was told there are at least 400 errors in my registry. I just got the pc in january {a HP v72} it is a new machine. I run windows xp home edition and it runs very slow even with my mediacom dsl. any answers? {P.S. I am NOT a pc wiz so easy terms please!!! lol thanks
