Is there a good registry defragmenter ? I used the trial version of
advanced registry optimizer - which got a fair evaluation in PCMag (?) -
and got a remarkable acceleration of the PC after the registry cleaning
& defragmentation. The trial period expired and like to know whether
whether there is a free registry defragmenter that people here can
recommand.

Afaik most folks use NTReg Optimizer (me included):

Also check out Erunt and Pagefile defragger from the same site.

If you had gone to my website :) you would have found
RegCompact

I've asked this question about one response to the original posting, so I
may as well ask it about yours as well: Does this software work on Win98?

The page lists the requirements rather explicitly.

I only see Erunt,NtRegOpt and Erunt Task. Could you tell me where the page
file defragger is?

Sorry, it's the same one Frank points to in this thread from
sysinternals.

Hi Mike :-)

Am I missing something because that's not what the requirements say.
You may well ask, Andy, but I wish you hadn't.

I've got Regcompact installed on my 98SE box. I got it from
dwerner.xoasis.com, which won't open.

Regcompact.Net from your link says it won't work on 9X.

But from majorgeeks

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=465

it says Regcompact.net v1.8, apparently the same as your link, is
authored by D Werner, the same as what wrote mine.

I can tell you from the screenshots that it is NOT the same prog, but it
has the same icon.

I have a couple of cans of lager in the fridge that are calling me, so
I'll leave you to figure it out.....

It's called RegCompact.NET and it requires Microsoft.NET Framework.
This disqualifies it imo.

Try http://www.bookcase.com/library/software/win9x.util.undef.html

< snip >

The readme says "RegCompact is Shareware."

The homepage link on that link goes nowhere either

Following the payment link brought this up:

"This product has been deleted from the RegSoft.com system and is no longer
available for purchase. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have
caused you."

https://www.regsoft.net/regsoft/vieworderpage.php3?productid=34532

So I guess it's available, and 9X users should grab it while it's around.

It seems to work OK, (or at least it does no damage!) on my box ;-)
