I received an error message the other day after
restarting my computer. It asked to go into safe mode or
load normally. I choose safe mode and it came up with:

The following file is missing or corrupted:
C:\Windows\Ifshlp.sys

The following file is missing or corrupted:
C:\Windows\System\Vmm32.vxd
Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g.,
C:\Windows\System\Vmm32.vxd

I also get the error message which says "Windows has
detected a registry/configuration error. Use SCANREG to
correct this error."

I have tried booting from a boot disk and using the
scanreg as described in "Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article - 183887" but it says it cannot locate the file
or does not exist. I have also tried restoring the system
from the command prompt and it tells me the file cannot
be loaded (%systemroot.) command.

I went as far as putting in the WIN ME disc that is for
reinstallation of Windows. But when I go to reinstall
Windows, it tells me the system already exists. What is
weird is that my operating system is XP and on boot up,
the Win ME logo comes up then goes to the safe
mode/normal load screen. I upgraded about a year ago with
the XP Home Upgrade. I tried inserting the Upgrade disc
for XP and reinstalling, but the message I get there, is
that there is "no operating system."

Is there anything that can be done to get my machine up
and running? If I have to reinstall Windows, I can do
that..but it won't let me do it either way. My only
concern is that my data on the drive is not lost when I
reinstall or fix the problem.

Can anyone suggest any more ideas or provide a solution
to my problem?

Thanks in advance!!!

This relates to Windows 95/98 or ME, not to Windows XP, which is very
different. So try in one of the Windows 98 groups, like
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion, or
microsoft.public.windowsme.general

Again, these are not XP files. What is odd is that I have "never" seen an
XP system boot with a Windows ME splash screen. That should have been a
sign. I would suggest from here to reinstall XP again. Good luck!

110% positive I have XP installed. It was the Home
edition Upgrade from ME.

Thanks for the help. But i tried reinstalling xp (the
upgrade version of home), and it tells me that there is
no operating system on my machine :S

I tried reinstalling ME, but it tells me the cluster is
bad...arrgh

Previous reply by Ron:

Recurring instances of bad clusters are often a sign of impending
total failure.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their drive
diagnostic program and run it. That may tell you some more about the
condition of the drive.
