Any one knows of a program(free) that would clean the registry of items left
after the installed program is removed?

Be careful 'cleaning up' the registry. You may inadvertently remove
some entries that will cause problems later - sometimes much later -
and you won't have a clue where the problem originated.

If you really want to clean up the registry, get a good tutorial on the
subject and do it manually. You don't really need to remove all those
broken links since they take up very little space anyway.

If you're REALLY serious about cleaning it up and want to be perfectly
safe, reinstall Windows.

Also use these in conjunction with RegSeeker.

jv16 PowerTools 1.3.0.195, which doesn't expire, is available here:

Click on Registry tool > Tools > Registry Cleaner > Continue
When finished, Click on Select > Special select > Items that
should be safe to remove > Remove.

Or, the renamed later version ( dos'nt hurt to use both )
RegCleaner

RegCleaner 4.3.0.780 ( last freeware version ) OS: Win9x/NT/ME/2000/XP

jv16 PowerTools & RegSeeker both store in Backup on their main
page.
Opening Backup allows you to either Restore or Delete.

The best way (in my opinion) to clean up after an uninstall is a little
foresight. Use an installer monitoring program to watch the original
install while it's happening so you can later remove most of it.

I personally use Total Uninstall, which is hosted at the infamous Last
Freeware Version website.

I've also written a short article with tips on it's use for this and
other scenarios.
