registry check on offline drive, not current registry, is it possible?

Is there a util to scan / repair the registry other than the one which
is currently loaded? I have what I think is a registry problem which
prevents WinXP booting at all (even in safe mode). I've conencted the
drive to another computer so I can see the contents just fine, but I
can't convince any registry utilities to look at THAT registry instead
of the one on the running system.

Any ideas?
