In addition to task manager not working (doesn't display processes visibly
any more), regedit doesn't open any more either.

Any ideas? (Running XP sp2)

Thanks - Jim

Install xp cd,exit the info page, then go to run, type:cmd In cmd type:
Sfc /Scannow When the graph is thru type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,
then type:EXIT Restart computer,remove cd.If that doesnt correct it,then
create a new account, start up xp in new,see if the problem(s) are gone,if so,
you have a corrupt user account.

Jim,

A virus/trojan is causing this. First run a fully updated trojan/virus scanner.

Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappears while opening:

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan

Symantec Security Check

I have installed Trend Micro's AV and Spy software. Scanned and Cleaned.

Still NO longer have functions below (at least) even when logged in as
administrator:

Services
Tasks
Regedt32
All dos level commands that show or remove tasks
Advanced options on user setup panel in control panel

What the heck can I do to fix this?

Thanks - Jim
