Guys

For some reason regedit is being 'loaded' (activated) on my PC at startup. This is causeing some problems for me when I wish to restart of shut-down my comp. I now have to go into task manager and end the regedit process before I can do this

How do I stop this from happening? I've tried everything I can think of, and now am begging for other ideas

Cheers

Hi streatas,

Have you tried going to Start > Run > msconfig
startup tab and disabling regedit there?

Good luck

Roger

That was one of the first thing i tried. I've also disabled everything that is not entirely necessary, with no success

Thanks for your input, and if you have any other ideas, then please let me know

Cheers

Disable ALL the startup programs in msconfig, reboot, and recheck if the
problem still occurs. Does regedit get loaded if you boot into Safe
mode?

Hi streatas,

Try the file monitoring utility available from
www.systeminternals.com to find out which process may be calling
regedit.

Also do a search for 'regedit.exe' from within regedit to see if it is
called by the registry, in which case you could delete the entry.

These are all the regedit entries I have on my Windows XP Pro:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Regedit.exe
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regedit\shell\open\command
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile\DefaultIcon
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile\shell\open\command

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\SheelNoRoam\MUICache
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\regedit.exe
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\regedit\shell\open\command
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\regfile\DefaultIcon
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\regfile\shell\open\command

HKEY_USERS\<user ID>\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache

Did you install any hardware or software around the time this
happened?

You could also do a search for malware using ad-aware and spybot (both
free) to see if malware is behind this event.

Try downloading, installing and updating the
spyware removers from the links below. Run both of them.

Spybot S&D

Good luck
