I have XP Home with SP2 and have been aflicted with viruses and Trojans
which I thought I had finally got rid of.

Now, I scanned with the free online Symatec virus check which returned one
file as being infected with WinAntiSpyware.

I looked up their removal instructions but when I tried to go into the
registry I founf that regedit.exe has disappeared (maybe deleted by the
virus?).

How do I access the Registry now?

Thank you very much

What error message do you get exactly? Sometimes the virus will create
files titled regedit.com and they will be found in a path area earlier
than the path to the correct file.

Here's what I would try:

When you try to run regedit, type regedit.exe Also try regedt32.exe

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged
or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so
damaged files will be replaced.

Thank you very much.

Well, the message I get is like this:

When I enter regedit in Start/Run I get a box which (translating from French...) says:

Windows does not find regedit. Verify that you have entered the name correctly and try again. To find a file press Start/Find.

I also ran SFC /Scannow. I was surprised that when it finished it just disappeared without even saying Hello. I expected some sort of report. Then I tried in safe mode and it does not even start. I also have that problem with McAfee: it works ok (I hope) but fails to light up when I try in safe mode. Just a flicker as if it were to open a box and then nothing.

It feels as if someone is controlling my computer!

Anyway, what can I do to access the Registry? Can I reinstall regedit.exe?

Thank you very much

The WinAntiSpyware infestation may be blocking your use of Regedit.
There are a number of different malware items that do this.

A couple of suggestions:

1. Boot the computer into Safe Mode and then try using Regedit. To
start the computer in Safe Mode turn it on and start tapping the F8
key just as soon as the first information of any kind shows on the
screen. Keep tapping rapidly until the Windows XP Startup Menu
appears and then choose Safe Mode from the menu. Note that if the
Windows XP Startup splash screen appears (before the Startup Menu
does) you have missed it and will have to restart the computer and try
again.

2. Go to one of the following online scanner sites and see if they
will not only detect but also remove the malware for you:
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Good luck
