Am I understanding this correctly, that backup is automatic upon
normal shutdown. And, to restore, simply F8 upon reboot and choose
"last known good configuration"?? Do I get a choice of dates, etc?
Thanks, Bonnie

The registry does backup but you have no choice of dates for the last know
good configuration, it does exactly as it say's, restores to the last know
good configuration. Unfortunately, this may not always solve your original
problem.
It may be worth using a search engine to search for the free registry backup
application called Erunt. This will backup all your registry hives. However,
this is not automatic, you need to do this manually.

Thanks John, I'll investigate that "Erunt" utility.

Hi there
If you want to do a file restore, you do not use F8....go to the start menu, choose Accessories, System Tools, File Restore and then you will see a choice that says "Restore my computer to an earlier date"....or you have the option of making a new restore point if you will be adding a new programme and want to set a restore point before you add it in case something goes wrong....I wouldn't suggest playing with the F8 option at all unless you know a lot about regedit, msconfig, etc
Hope this helps a bit.
