Regarding Metatags and site optimization

Just out of curiousity, do meta tags really doing anything anymore to better you ranking on the search engines? From what I understand, Google doesn't really rank by the meta tags and I'm not sure if the other search engines are anymore either.

Anyone have any info or guidelines on site optimization?

I dont think they matter as much as they used to but its always good practice to put them in. Theres bound to be somthing out there that would reference them still and the more places your site gets referenced the more hits your likely to get
 
They're still used by alot of web-apps, to catorgarise, and check for any potential unsuitable content. It's worth putting them in, but as you say google and others don't really use them anymore.
