I have got my hard drive into an awful mess and would
like to reformat the whole thing. Can I install my legal
copy of Windows XP Pro, Office XP Pro etc for a second
time?
I would be grateful for any advice or suggestions on this
matter.
thanks in anticipation

Sounds like your question is coming from an activation perspective. If
that is the case then the answer is yes. Installing Windows XP and
Office XP again on the same hardware is fine and will not cause any
problems.

I'm in a rather worse position in that I can't find my
installation disk, though I have the packaging and the
product key. I don't remember whether i registered the
original build -- is there any procedure for replacing it
short of buying a new copy?

Yes. As many times as you like on the same (or substantially the same)
hardware. Read more at www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm

Do the format as part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP
CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New
Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete
the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage. You will have the regular 30 days in which to activate; get on
the net and run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows

That key will work with any XP CD of the same sort (eg Home/Pro;
Full/Upgrade/OEM must match up). So borrow one to use with your key.
