I am planning to sell one of my laptops and want to purge info and data by reformatting the HD before I do. Do I need to boot from a CD or floppy to do this? What software would be best? Don't know if FDISK works any more. After format I have the WIN XP Home CD to reinstall XP. Thanks in advance!

If you want to format and reinstall xp then just boot to the xp cd and follow the on-screen instructions to format and install.
If you don't want to put xp back on then use fdisk and delete the partition and create a new one and format it. Then install os of chioce or leave blank.

Thanks!

You're welcome.

which are liable to lead into trouble without a little more guidance:
after booting the XP CD direct, enter Setup Windows, and after the
license agreement take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where,
hit ESC; select and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one
to be formatted at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one
