Hi,
I'm presently running NT on one machine and 98 on another
and thinking of upgrading both to xp. Can someone tell me
if I can simply install xp without re-formatting the drive
and reinstalling programs i.e install over what is
already running, or do I need to format first and
re-install everything? I know ideally I should format first
but don't want to if I don't have to.

prepare to upgrade properly 316639,then assess whether
your software is too old and you need to clean
install, assuming you prepare both properly you may be
able to upgrade both,if you dont backup data first be
prepared to lose it.

Yes, you can upgrade by installing over the top of your present
operating systems. Just be sure that when buy the two copies of
XP they both be upgrade or full versions. You can not do an
upgrade with an OEM version (which many people confuse with the
full version).

I don't agree that "ideally [you] should format first." Upgrading
over the top usually works just fine, and is much easier. I think
almost everyone should at least try the upgrade; if problems
develop you can always revert to a clean installation.
