cmd "FORMAT C: /fs:ntfs" or any other dirrivitive of the
cmd i get the reply"format cannot run because the volume
is in use by another process. format may run if this
volume is dismounted first.all opened handles to this
volume would then be invalid.would you like to force a
dismount on this volume y/n" when i enter Y it just
returns to windows. ???

Hi

You can't format a hard disk/partition from within Windows. What are you
trying to do? Try using convert instead of format. From a command prompt
type

convert /?

I am just joining in and I will try to do what you
mentioned. The problem that I have is that when I insert
the XP CD into my CD ROM and restart it does not boot
from my CD? Even when I changed my Bios settings to CD
ROM. Can you help?
