refering to contents of cell as opposed to cell number

Hello, I need to plug the contents of a cell for a DATEVALUE function. So I
need to get the date e.g. sep 13, 2003 as opposed to "C6". How would I do
this?

I need one column to show actual dates and I need another column to convert
those dates to Excel time code for other functions.

format the cell as General. If the value in the cell looks like 37887 or
37887.023435

then the cell already contains an excel time code.
