redundant processes in TaskManager-Prosesses

My 2.4GHz, 512MB computer takes several seconds to show a brake down of the
drive contents or to start OE. Other tasks are too slow.
HDD are defragmentd and half empty.

At the same time TaskManager-Prosesses shows a long list of processes most
of them I have no ideat what they are doing.

Is there a way to see if some of them are redundant and switch them off?

(PS. My question related to w2k, yet there is no performance-related NG for w2k and I was told that XP and w2k are similar in this respect and an advise for XP should work for w2k)

Thnaks, Carey,
So you mean that the processes shown up in the Task Manager are the
services. The resource you recommend starts with
"I don't recommend you change any of the services from the default
installation of XP. Yes, you may pick up a tiny performance gain by fiddling
with the settings, but it won't be anything substantial."
Which means that services should not be the cause of my problem. Can you
tell for sure that every task shown in the Task Manager is a Windows
default service.
If not, is there a way to tell a Windows default service from some parasitic
process which I should get rid of?
