Red cross in powerpoint '97

What if any is the latest update on the red cross problem on Powerpoint '97?

Can it be cured by upgrading to Powerpoint 2003?

Can anything be salvaged from the old presentation?

Here's pretty much what's known about it:

RED X instead of graphics

Whether it's cured entirely in later versions of PPT or not, it's hard to say.
There are a lot of old presentations that've wandered between multiple PPT
versions, so a file that comes up with red x's in PPT2003 might really have
been bunged by some other version.

One thing's certain: we don't see anywhere near the number of Red X complaint
we used to in PPT 97 and 2000. Even if the problem's not totally solved, it's
fair to say that the volume level's been turned WAY down.
