My recycle bin has suddenly decided it wants to automatically delete the
files I'm trying to move into it. It will prompt to ask me if I want to
automatically delete the file every time I've tried to drag a file into it.
I've checked all the settings (right click properties) and it is NOT set to
automatically delete. I don't know what happened. Can anyone help?? Thanks!

How full is the Recycle Bin?

Hope this helps.

Ringie & Detlev

I am having the same problem as Ringie. My recycle bin is empty, even
though the types of files shown on My Computer or Windows Explorer (and my
recent deletion of files of numerous types) mean there should be lots there.
Like Ringie, my check box is unchecked, so it should NOT automatically delete
everything [ and never used to either, until some time very recently!]. My
recycle bin is very large, and the only things that used to delete
immediately (after OK'ing confirmation box) are large video files [eg 1 hour
long TV show].

i have Windows XP Home, that automatically updates, and EZ Trust antivirus.
250GB HDD with heaps of spare space. There is another folder called
"Recycler", that has two files, one last updated today, the other in 2005.
Using Ulead photo explorer, I can see some deleted TV recordings etc in the
newer file, and some documents in the older one, but I don't think i'm seeing
everything. I presume this Recycler is part of Win XP to salvage recent
files?

I am completely mystified as to what has suddenly changed with the Recycle
Bin, and more importantly, how to fix it. Grateful for any help.

I found a solution from Michael Cecil on another thread. It worked for me.

To get this working I needed to have only Explorer.exe running at the start.
To get "Taskmanager", use Control/Alt/Del simultaneously.

Michael's solution:
Assuming you're using NTFS you could do the following procedure to nuke
your recycle bin and force it to start fresh but you'll lose any pretty
icons you might see associated with them in Explorer. IOW, the Recycler
folder will look just like any other folder. I doubt it will work if you
have any sort of Norton Recycle Bin Protected Files Doodah Doodah
installed however. (Standard disclaimers apply - if your computer melts,
your cat explodes, etc. don't blame me. I've done this before and it
worked for me.)

1. Open a command prompt window first.
2. Open taskmanager and end the explorer process. The taskbar should
vanish.
3. In the command prompt type:
rmdir /s c:\recycler
where c: is the drive and press <enter>. If it prompts you, answer yes to
deleting the folder or files. Repeat this for all your hard drives, if
you have more than one.
4. When finished type:
explorer
and press <enter>. You should get back your taskbar.

Try deleting some files and see if the desktop Recycle Bin icon works as
expected.
(end of solution)

Empty the recycle bin if possible, then try again and see if a deleted
test file shows up in the bin. If this doesn't help, see if this article
applies:

Confirming that the fix I reported - see the last item under Ringie's post -
has indeed continued to work even after rebooting. I have not therefore
needed to consult the document quoted by Detlev.
