Hi! approximately a week ago, my recycle bin stopped working, meaning I
delete things and they don't show up in my bin. When I open the bin there is
nothing to delete. Is there any way to fix this without reformatting the disk
and then that might not fix it either? Basically when I delete something that
should show up in the bin, I open the icon and nothing shows up in the bin!
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions you might be able to give
me! By the way, I run the system repair about 15 times (using the system CD)
with no success. My system is XP PRO.

Right-click Recycle Bin, select Properties. Make sure this part
is NOT selected:
"Do not move files to RB. Remove them immediately when deleted".

George

I made sure that that box was unchecked from the beginning of my problem. Any
other suggestions, George?

Right click on the bin to bring up the properties
tab see if the if the box labeled Do not move files to
the recycle bin remove files immed .. is checked , if
so uncheck it
A Little Bit of Everything.. http://www.whaatsoever.com

The only other thing that occurs to me is to make sure that when
deleting a file you use the Delete key and not Shift+Delete. The
latter will permanently delete regardless of whether that box in
RB is unchecked.

The other thing you could check is a Registry value. IF you're
comfortable dealing with the Registry, scroll to HK-Current User \
Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Current Value \ Policies \
Explorer. Look in the right-hand pane for a value called
NoRecycleFiles. If it's there with a value data of 1, change the
value data to 0. If you don't have the NoRecycleFiles value, you
might create it and assign it a value of 0.

Hope this helps.

George

Go to Kelly's site, click on "R" and scroll to recycle bin for some
troubleshooting tips.

Did it stop working, or did you or someone else who uses that machine right
click on the recycle bin, clicked properties, and selected "Don't move
files to the recycle bin?"

That has already been asked and answered.

No need to point that out: When I responded, the "already asked and
answered" posts had not propagated. Newsgropus aren't instant.

You continually do this, days after it's been asked and answered. I think
you just like to read your own posts. Maybe you should access this
newsgroup through the MS server? Then you will have no delay. While we are
at it loose the comments about top v bottom posting. In this newsgroup it's
accepted to do top, bottom or inline.

Catching up on posts, sorted by last activity. Getting close to the end.
Plus, many responses confirming the right one does increase confidence in
the answer. Don't discourage participation, even if it is a little bit
delayed.

Readability of posts and basic Internet courtesy trumps Sorry: Poor
quoting habits make searching for answers more difficult, wastes bandwidth
and reduces readability. Top posting is never acceptable.

You just started to post in this newsgroup a few days ago and without having
any knowledge of the accepted practices here you launched a net nanny
approach. Done top post, don't do this, don't do that. And you regularly
post to threads that have been asked and answered.

A better part of courtesy is to know what is the norm at a place and go with
that norm. You want to change what the posters do in here to match what you
deem is appropriate.

Help people out in a timely fashion and keep your net nanny actions to
yourself.

I have knowledge of accepted practices. They don't vary just because the
newsgroup does. I've been reading this group for about a month now
actively, longer passively. Don't patronize me, I know what I'm doing.
It's not clear that you do.

I'm not. I'm following commonly accepted Internet practice as defined in
RFC 1855.

You are p*ssing people off in here, and for no other reason, that I can see,
other than to be a jerk. Besides that you have no credibility.

When I called you on posting responses to days old threads where the poster
had already acknowledged the solution, you made the claim that it was do to
slow propagation of messages. Yet today you are posting to messages just a
few hours old. In a response to Ken Bates you basically admitted you were
posting to old threads just to validate the solution. So where is your
credibility?

You're holier than though attitude gets nothing accomplished. Stop being a
net nanny, and show some courtesy to the people in this newsgroup. Your so
called knowledge of accepted practices is irrelevant. What is relevant are
the accepted practices in this newsgroup. It's not your place to establish
some sort of personal standard for what should be done here.
