anybody any idea why this computer (XP) I've just inherited seems not to show
any files I delete in the recycle bin, or maybe doesn't send any there. Have
tried showing hidden files - the bin still stays very empty... Steve

There is a way that you can set windows xp to automatically delete files and
not place them in the recycle bin.

Right click on the recycle bin and select properties. On the Global tab make
sure the box that says "Do not move files to the recycle bin" is NOT ticked.

Click Apply then OK

Now files should go to the recycle bin.

Steve, are you also running Norton on your computer ?

no - no anti-virus software put on it yet (although microsoft's service pack
SP2 is installed).
and ticking or unticking the box in Properties ("do not send deleted files
to Recycle Bin") has no effect
I'm still smiling....

OK, I was thinking about Norton Utilities and the protected recycle bin.
Sorry I can't help.
