Recycle Bin Problem

When I try to retrieve a file from my recycle bin, it is quite a
chore. As I'm trying to find a file in a long list of deleted files,
the screen keeps refreshing over and over again, about once every 2
seconds. This causes a flickering in the screen, and it forces me to
the top of the screen each time, so that I'm not able to find/retrieve
my file, if the list is long. Any ideas?

Why have so many files in there? You could delete some until the list
is short enough to fit the screen.

Alternatively, if that is going to take too long, and you know the
name of the file, use the search function and search the Recycle Bin.
I've just done that, and it works. Mind you, I'm using XP and I don't
know if 2000 is different.

Cliff

Cliff, thanks for your ideas. Granted, we should always keep our
Recycle Bin as empty as possible, since these files take up space just
as much as the undeleted ones. But as often happens, I tend to forget
this little chore before it gets out of hand. And of course I could
empty the whole thing in a flash, but I would lose the file(s) I might
want back.

Searching is a good idea too, if I know the name of the file.
Occasionally I will be looking for a file like a Word document, and I
know what it's about, but perhaps not the exact name. Sometimes I am
looking for a group of files that were deleted recently, and I will
resort on the age of the files. But every time it refreshes (which it
didn't use to do), it throws me back to the top of the ordered list.

I just don't understand why it's going through this continuous
refreshing of the screen.

You don't have to permanently delete everything in your
recycle bin in order to empty it. You can always cut
and paste the files to another folder.

I do that sort of thing regularly. I first get rid of
big files like software, MP3s, MPEGs, etc, that I can
always download again in the future or reinstall from
the original CD. At that point I typically have a
Recycle Bin that can fit onto a CD - then I burn the CD
and scribble the date on it.

I used to see that when I use WinNT4 and Symantec's AV program.
I found some setting that let me tell the AV program to stop
monitoring the Recycle Bin.

Yes, that is odd. I've done a brief search of the Microsoft Knowledge
Base, but you might want to do a more thorough search of the Microsoft
site.

Another thought that occurred to me was that you might have better
luck looking at the Recycled *Folder* rather than look at the Recycle
*Bin*. You will have to switch on the "Show Hidden files" option
though to see the contents of that folder..

Cliff,

I couldn't find a recycled folder. What is the name of the folder, and
where is is located? I did a search on anything with "recycle" in the
name, with no luck. I do have "hidden" turned off, so I should be able
to see everything.

OK, I have XP here, but I'm pretty sure I remember that it is the same
or similar in 2000. There is an extra checkbox in the Folder Options
"Hide Protected System Folders" or similar which might make it
visible.

The folder should be in the root folder of your system drive. In most
cases it should be in C:\,
