Recycle Bin Acting Up

Here's a weird one: When I double click on my Recycle Bin icon, the computer
makes a noise like my hard drive is starting to spin up and then, after
about 8 or 9 seconds, the Recycle Bin finally opens. Then, when I empty the
Recycle Bin my desktop refreshes and some of the icons in my system tray are
gone (but the programs are still apparently running!)

I think I'm pretty careful about avoiding viruses. Did I do something wrong?
Why is this happening?

As for the delay, i am not sure, maybe a drive problem,
however, the icons disappearing is EXPLORER (the desktop)
has closed and restarted (not the same as windows
explorer). Apparently, something is causing the recycle
bin/EXPLORER to fault which is why the desktop restars and
your icons disappear. Try a full chkdsk, go to START,
RUN, type in CMD, when the DOS looking window opens, type
in: chkdsk /r
and answer YES when it asks if you would like to schedule
it for the next time you restart
when your prompt returns, close the window and reboot.

see if this helps

GOOD LUCK!!!

I appreciate your trying to help, but I think you're misunderstanding
something. The desktop IS Windows explorer, and chkdsk /r checks for
physical damage to the surface of my hard drive. It's the /f switch that
asks you about restarting.

I'm still hoping someone out there can help me.
