My computer won't boot, do I need boot cd's?
I'm trying to use 8 cd's from hp for recovery. I don't care about saving
data, I'll start fresh. When the 8 cd's are done loading, I get the
message, "cannot
format user partition" "recovery cannot continue". When I start without the
cd's, I get the message, "NTLDR is missing" I'd really appreciate any help.

Hi, Henry.

As I said in the other Discussion Group where you posted this question...

EIGHT! CDs? WinXP comes on just a single CD-ROM!

HOW are you "trying to use 8 cd's"? Are you booting from one of those CDs?
A full retail WinXP CD-ROM is bootable.

It sounds like you should be asking HP about this problem, not Microsoft.
If your WinXP is an OEM version customized by HP for their specific
hardware, then HP is responsible for its support, not MS.

Did you receive a full WinXP CD-ROM with your computer? Or only one or more
"recovery" CDs? What is the specific model of your computer? If you tell
us, someone here might recognize it and be able to give you some advice for
it.

Thanks for your response, I'll try to answer your questions. I have a 514n hp
pavillion. I do F10 and when it asks I put the 8 cd's in, yes they're from
hp. I'm using them as recovery. I don't have a retail win XP disk.
When the 8 cd's are done loading, I get the message, "cannot format user
partition" "recovery cannot continue". When I try to start computer, I get
the message, "NTLDR is missing" I'd really appreciate any help.

Hi, Henry.

Thanks for the additional info, including confirmation that you have 8 CDs
from HP. As I said, WinXP is complete on just ONE CD-ROM. My guess is that
those extra CDs are for software that HP "bundles" with that model computer,
in addition to WinXP itself. They probably are designed to restore your
computer to its factory-fresh state, deleting everything you've done since
you bought the machine.

Since I know nothing of HP's computers, I'll back off now and hope that
someone here recognizes what you've told us and will have some advice for
you.

All I can do is STRONGLY urge you to contact HP:
www.hp.com

Good luck!
