You have no recovery disk and no XP CD? The manufacturer is required to
supply you with some means of recovery. If they don't supply a CD they
usually have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. Check your
documentation or with the system manufacturer, you might find the
information at their web site, for their recovery procedure.

Henri, if you don't have a WinXP CD with the Recovery Console on it
then you can try removing your hard
drive and connecting it to a friends system. From there you can access
X:\Windows\System32\Config Folder. Delete System, Security, Sam, Software
and Default. Then go to X:\Windows\Repair
Folder. Copy the same five files you find in the Repair folder and Paste
back into the Config folder.
X = the letter of your drive as it shows up in your friends system.
Those five files are your orginal Registry
files when Xp was first installed. If you have access to the Recovery
Console then check here

You need to access the Recovery Console to perform the MS recommended repair
procedure. I believe that you can do this with downloadable boot floppies
and Recovery Console which I believe is also downloadable. If you are sure
that you do not have XP on a hidden partition , buying a XP retail disk is
the way to go. Included is the link for the recommended repair for the
problem that you have. Jym

You don't need a recovery diskette. Your WinXP CD is bootable. Make sure
your BIOS is set to boot from the CD if a CD is in the drive. Then boot to
your XP CD and do a repair install.

Hi.
I'm working on the same problem and it seems that every post I find only has
a fix if you have the original XP Cd. My pc came new from Systemax and all I
got was a CD titled "Advanced recovery and diagnostic tools" which, after
several attempts, will boot it up but will only give you 3 options. 1
Hardware testing (which I did... everything passed), 2 complete system
restore (which I did) and 3 Restart.
Searching Microsoft support for "Windows XP registry repair"
I came across a "Windows 2000 registry repair utility" that does reference
XP but does not come right out and state "for XP". From what I gather you
download 6 floppys, then download the repair utility onto disk #1. Then
re-boot starting with that disk.
I copied the disks but would like to double check with someone before I
copied the utility. Here is the link to page

Thanks for any help you can give me! Jeff.
